Domestic Violence Advocate

Responsibilities
 Provide crisis counseling and emotional support to victims of domestic violence.

  • Help victims develop personal safety plans.
  • Maintain client confidentiality as outlined in the Shelter Standards and the confidentiality policy.
  • Provide legal advocacy and accompaniment to victims, assist victims in filing for orders of protection.
  • Provide information about victim rights, available resources, and services.
  • Make referrals and coordinate services for victims and their children.
  • Conduct shelter admissions as needed.
  • Provide follow-up services to current and former clients.
  • Facilitate support groups for victims/survivors.
  • Respond to helpline calls.
  • Assist with answering the helpline after business hours on a rotating basis.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relations with other community agencies and organizations.
  • Participate and represent the organization in community meetings and committees.
  • Communicate with the program director, report, and consult about every crisis situation.
  • Maintain accurate, timely documentation and timely input of data according to agency policy.
  • Provide transportation assistance to clients as needed.
  • Complete 40 hours of annual training
  • Participate in supervision sessions and staff meetings.
  • Receive, Inventory, document, and put donations in storage buildings when needed.
  • Assist with office cleaning.
  • Other duties deemed necessary.
Qualifications:
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to provide trauma-informed care to trauma survivors.
  • Ability to convey care, compassion, and empathy to trauma survivors, while maintaining professional boundaries
  • Ability to behave in a trustworthy and reliable manner.
  • Some college is preferred but not required.
  • Available to be on call with immediate response.
  • Available for after-hour community activities.

  • Stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time.
  • You may be required to talk or hear, reach, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch.
  • You may be required to lift or mover over 25 lbs.
  • Drive to various locations to include schools, shelter, court and community partners.
  • Occasional nights and weekends may be required.
