?A Bountiful Trinity: The Works of Romero Britto? Curated by Luis R. Cancel Exhibition Tour Organized by Carole Sorell, Inc. Bountiful Trinity: The Works of Romero Britto is an exhibition that brings together sculptures, paintings and works on paper by one of Brazil?s most recognized international artist. Born in Recife in the northeastern part of Brazil, Britto is a self-taught artist who has risen from humble origins to international acclaim for his colorful and optimistic creations. A Bountiful Trinity is organized around three major themes that often appear in Britto?s oeuvre: Homage to Art History Nature Portraits Luis R. Cancel, an international curator and former Director of The Bronx Museum of the Arts, has selected 43 major works by Britto that represent each of the themes. He has written an essay for the exhibition that explores how Britto has examined and been inspired by major artists and chapters in art history; by nature and its flora and fauna and by the most elemental of human emotions ? one?s love for family and friends. The exhibition essay also provides insights into Britto?s creative origins as illustrated by this selection: ?As the public observes the prolific creative output of Romero Britto, it may be easy to lose oneself in the sea of celebrity portraits or the menagerie of beasts, plants and insects, or even in the wide range of objects ? from airplanes to backpacks ? that carry his signature style. So it may help us to heed the words of Britto?s Godfather, the noted Sociologist Gilberto Freyre who wrote a letter of introduction for Britto in 1983 as he was embarking on his first trip to Europe from his native Pernambuco, Brazil: ?Immensely intuitive, perceptive and receptive, the contact with respectable foreign environments will be extremely beneficial and will stimulate the maturing of his remarkable predisposition to the visual arts.? ?Those prescient words of introduction by Dr. Freyre may have been a solace to the young, effervescent Britto who was nevertheless venturing out into the world alone.? The exhibition provides a clear path for museum audiences to gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of the subjects that have inspired the artist over several decades, while at the same time, immerse them in a world of youthful energy and bright colors.
